The path to an empty nest starts long before the dorm move-in or college send-off. It begins quietly — around middle school — as our kids start to stretch their wings under the safety of ours. Bit by bit, they grow more independent until, one day, they launch into their own lives.
For some, it’s a physical separation. For others, it’s a shift that happens even while everyone is still under the same roof — a subtle emotional distance that signals a new season.
The change can still take us by surprise. We see the signs — the senior portraits, the college emails, the campus tours — yet nothing truly prepares us for how different life feels once they leave.
I was blindsided. Despite knowing it was coming, I didn’t grasp how profoundly their launch would affect me. My biggest shift was in identity — asking, who am I outside of being “Moo” or “Mumzie,” as my kids affectionately call me?
Yes, I had a thriving career and plenty of achievements, but nothing filled me with the same deep sense of meaning — that capital-P Purpose — that motherhood did.
That sense of loss became a turning point — the nudge I needed to finally pursue something I’d dreamed about for decades: studying applied positive psychology and helping women rediscover themselves in midlife.
I dove deep into the research on empty nesting — a well-documented transition — and conducted my own qualitative study within a Facebook community of nearly 300,000 empty nesters. What emerged were six common challenges women face during this season, each in their own way and intensity.
These findings — and my own lived experience — became the foundation for Flourishing Beyond the Nest.
We all have should haves. And if you’ve managed to avoid them — please, share your secret 🤫.
If I could do it all over again, I would have sought out women with “rearview mirror wisdom” — those who’ve navigated the road ahead, complete with the detours, speed bumps, and surprising moments of joy that emerge once your kids begin to fly the nest, whether physically or emotionally.
It’s long been my vision to create a program that blends my research with the evidence-based tools of positive psychology — to support women like you in all stages of nesting.
Because one thing I’ve learned for certain: this journey is not linear. It’s beautifully messy. Some days they’re out; the next, they’re back. You may have one foot in the parenting role and one stepping into your next chapter.
It’s complex, it’s layered — and it’s rich with opportunity for growth, meaning, and self-discovery.
This 8-week program was designed around the six common challenges that can arise during the empty-nest transition.
Each week combines two essential elements:
✨ Connection — a supportive small-group circle where we share openly and authentically in a safe, sacred space.
✨ Growth — an interactive workshop introducing evidence-based positive psychology tools tailored to each week’s theme.
You’ll also receive gentle take-home reflections and optional worksheets to deepen your learning between sessions. Occasionally, there may be a brief exercise or prompt to complete in preparation for the next session — all designed to support your personal exploration, not add pressure.
To be clear — positive psychology is not “happiology.”
It recognizes that we are a beautiful tapestry of emotions — joy, sadness, excitement, loss — none are good or bad. They simply are.
While traditional therapy often focuses on healing what’s wrong or unresolved from the past, positive psychology centers on what helps us flourish in the present and future. It invites us to move north of neutral — toward greater well-being and fulfillment.
Its foundation is the PERMA-V model, which cultivates:
P – Positive Emotions
E – Engagement
R – Relationships
M – Meaning
A – Achievement
V – Vitality
Wherever you are in your nesting journey, this space is for you.
The well-being tools you’ll learn are rooted in the PERMA model, and they can be applied to every area and stage of life — not just parenting.
